Leaving behind a man who haunts her memories and another who fills her dreams, Anne-Marie Duchemin flees to southern France to escape the escalating terror and bloodshed in Algeria. Arriving in the village of Castelnau, she is befriended by Gabriella Madison, a young American exchange student, who encourages her to volunteer in a local orphangage, now a haven for children displaced by the war.
